Jeffrey, Paul (H.) (New York, 8 April 1933)

Tenor saxophonist, arranger, and bandleader

After studying music at Ithaca College he worked with Illinois Jacquet (1958), Sadik Hakim (1961), and Howard McGhee (1966). In 1968 he joined Dizzy Gillespie for a tour of Europe and also led a recording session in which he played electronically enhanced saxophone (Electrifying Sounds, Savoy 12192). He recorded with Charles Moffett (1969), joined Count Basie briefly (1970), then played with Thelonious Monk (intermittently, 1970-75); he also led his own groups, with which he recorded three albums (1972-c. 1975). In 1977-8 he played, conducted, and wrote arrangements for Charles Mingus. Later he recorded with Lionel Hampton (1979, 1982). Jeffrey has also been active as a teacher; during his time at Rutgers he led the university's jazz ensemble.
